Baby Headband Tutorial

Like the flower hair clip tutorial I haven't seen any tutorials on how to make a baby headband. Here is one version of how to make one. I used a woman's knee high to make this one. You can use kids tights, nylons, stretchy lace. Or whatever else. Make sure you measure your baby's head and make the length of the headband the same size. The one I am making will fit 3+ months babies.

1. The only things needed are the tights, a little bit of ribbon. Preferably the same color as the headband. Also the sewing machine and hot glue. Cut the very ends off of the knee highs. Heat seal the ribbon on both ends.
2. Fold the tights over and even up the ends. Sew close to the edge with a gathering stitch.
It doesn't have to be perfect because we won't see that part when we finish.
3. Pull the end strings so that the tights gather.

The gather automatically folds in toward each other. Perfect for us.

4. Tie the ends of the strings together so that the gathering doesn't unravel.
5. Take the ribbon and wrap it around the seam. Hot glue right on to the seam with one side of the ribbon.

6. Hot glue the other side too. I try to pull it a little tight so that the bow or flower isn't flopping around.

You are done. Now you can put anything in the headband.
Here is what it looks like with a flower. To see how to make a flower hair clip go here.

As a comment... since I taught you how to do these...

I've found that 6-18 month baby tights fit 6-18 month old baby and probably younger. But I didn't make any until Millie was 6 monhts. Convenient, huh? I prefer baby tights because they're not as wide. But, that is my opinion.

I also use a ball-point needle in my sewing machine so that the knit of the tights doesn't run.

Wow, you make it look so easy! I will have to buy some tights the next time they are on sale so I can gift these!

Thanks so much for the great gift bag of goodies. I didn't know I was going to win so much! I have already used everything :) Such great stuff!! Thanks again!

This way of making a baby headband is a fantastic idea, using tights. I have several pairs my daughter has not used so I gave it a go. Please see my efforts at baby headband making at lilbowpeep.co.uk

Hey - just came across your blog and I love it! This is a really cute way to make headbands for babies. I am not as talented as you and so I buy the headband premade and add little embellishments and appliques - still lots of fun though! x
